For over 50 years, MET has been a leader in electrical product testing, becoming the first Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory in 1989. Today, MET is the responsive alternative for leading manufacturers.

In addition to traditional lighting and electric sign testing, MET Labs offers Light-Emitting Diode (LED) testing services for:

  • UL 1598 Luminaries
  • UL 1993 Self Ballasted Lamps and Lamp Adapters
  • UL 8750 Outline of Investigation for Light-Emitting Diode Light Sources for Use in Lighting Products.

The Safety Labs at MET can test most LED replacement bulbs including incandescent and fluorescent applications.

MET can provide energy efficiency certification for LED products, including In Situ Temperature Measurement Test (ISTMT) for lighting products: ANSI/UL 1598 or ANSI/UL 153. Learn more about our Energy Efficiency Certification Services.

MET has a 120kW solar array consisting of 476 panels at our headquarters in Baltimore. This is one of the largest commercial PV installations in Baltimore and the environmental benefits of it is dramatic – it will have the equivalent effect of planting 4,300 trees every year or replacing 54 average cars with hybrids.

MET is one of just a handful of labs that can test to all requirements of UL1703:

  • UL1703 – Safety of Flat-Plate Photovoltaic Modules and Panels
  • Flame Spread Test
  • Hot-Spot Endurance Test
  • Temperature Test
  • Voltage, Current and Power Measurements Test
  • Leakage Current Test
  • Strain Relief Test
  • Push Test
  • Cut Test
  • Bonding Path Resistance Test
  • Dielectric Voltage-Withstand Test
  • Wet Insulation-Resistance Test
  • Reverse Current Overload Test
  • Terminal Torque Test
  • Impact Test
  • Burning Brand Test
  • Water Spray Test
  • Accelerated Aging Test
  • Temperature Cycling Test
  • Humidity Test
  • Corrosive Atmosphere Test
    • Salt Spray
    • Moist Carbon Dioxide/Sulphur Dioxide
  • Metallic Coating Thickness Test
  • Mechanical Loading Test
  • Wiring Compartment Securement Test

MET also tests to these solar and PV standards:

IEC 61215 – Crystalline Silicon Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules – Design Qualification and Type Approval

IEC 61646 – Thin-Film Terrestrial Photovoltaic (PV) Modules – Design Qualification and Type Approval

IEC 61730-2 – Photovoltaic Module Safety Qualification, Part 2

As part of some of these standards, MET does 85°C/85%RH (relative humidity) testing, utilizing walk-in chambers. 85/85 is the standard test for service life assessment of photovoltaic modules cited in IEC and UL standards. MET can test to any time duration as specified by the client.

MET Labs is the rare lab that combines top-notch EMC and Product Safety experience and know-how to effectively and efficiently test renewable energy inverters for safety and anti-islanding requirements.

MET has supported multiple alternative energy initiatives. In the 1980s, MET was one of the first labs involved with renewable energy evaluation, by performing field inspections of wind generators for US Wind Power located at the Altamount Pass in Northern California. MET has also worked with the California Energy Commission, performing field inspections of solar panel installations.

MET is an experienced tester of inverters for solar panels, wind turbines, and other alternative energy harnessing equipment.

MET tests to these standards:

UL1741 – Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipment with Distributed Energy Resources

  • Anti-Islanding Testing to IEEE 1547.1

UL6140 – Outline of Investigation for Wind Turbine Generating Systems

UL6141 – Outline of Investigation for Wind Turbine Converters and Interconnection Systems Equipment

UL 458 & C22.2 No.107.1 Power Converters/Inverters for Land Vehicles & Marine Crafts

MET is also qualified to efficiency performance test grid-connected photovoltaic system inverters for the California Energy Commission.
