Ask Pat:
Q1: Are Panel PCs required to be listed?
Q2: What are the labeling requirements to UL 1573?
Q: We are looking at purchasing a panel pc, and our customer is requesting a UL compliant part. We have found a panel pc that comes with an external power adapter. The adapter has been tested to UL standards, however the panel pc has not. Additionally, the panel pc also has a battery backup (emergency power source). Would the panel pc itself be in scope for any UL standard? I am assuming that it might be in scope for UL 60950-1, however I am not 100% certain. I have often seen similar panel pc's that do not have UL compliance. Is it required?
-Kevin, San Antonio, TX
A: Since your question mentions UL, I assume the interest is the US market only. UL 60950-1, the US safety standard for information technology equipment, covers computers and their power supplies. It covers products powered from internal or external mains-connected power supplies as well as products that are battery operated. In my opinion the panel pc should fall into the scope of this standard; however, it is up to the buyer to determine if it must be listed to this standard or not. If the product is to be used in the workplace OSHA may require that it be listed. If it is to be sold by a major or minor retailer, the retailer may require that it be listed. Local electrical and building code authorities may require that it be listed. The property owner's insurance company may require that it be listed. As you can see the need for it to be listed can come from one of many sources. Our opinion and the safest bet (no pun intended), is to have it listed. But we cannot say with 100% certainty that it is required.
Q:Hi there, What is the correct way of labeling a product's input voltage under UL1573 and CSA C22.2 No. 166 when the power supply is of the auto-ranging type (100 to 240 V, 50/60 Hz)? Should it be "100-125 V, 60 Hz"? Or should it be "120 V, 60 Hz"?
- Oscar, Sunrise, FL
A: Assuming the power supply is built-in, that it is safety certified, and that it is the only part of the end product connected directly to the AC mains, then reusing the power supply ratings or a subset of the power supply ratings should be acceptable. It is important that the end product rating does not conflict with the internal power supply rating.
