Q: My product has been certified per EN60950-1 (2006) with Am. 11 (2009). Do I need to retest the product to meet the latest EN60950-1 (2006) with Am. 12 (2010)?
-Lisa, Santa Ana, CA
A: Amendment 12 to the European Standard EN 60950-1:2006 deals only with Portable Sound Systems (Mp3 players, CD Players etc). Unless your product is considered a portable sound system, the changes covered in the amendment do not affect you and therefore no additional/updated testing is required. If your product is considered a portable sound system, then it is probably best that you seek additional evaluation/testing to ensure that your product is still compliant.
Q: During the CB qualification of a product, what is the rule determining when it is required to verify the contents of the certification report of a critical component (e.g. isolation transformer or small DC/DC converter located between SELV circuit and TNV circuit, etc.) or is the verification of the spec sheet sufficient, no need to look into the report of that component?
-Clermond, Quebec, CN
A: This is a matter of policy for the particular reviewing NCB and other NCBs may address this differently than MET. The sufficiency of data sheet review versus a test report review may also be a matter of the particular situation. However, if the part in question is clearly perceived as safety critical and it is not certified and under adequate regular surveillance for continued compliance, a review of the test report is highly probable.
Q: Doesn't the Automotive Directive require conformity to EN55025? What are the corresponding requirements in the US, if any?
-Keith, Sunnyvale, CA
A: In US, SAE is primarily responsible for automotive standards, not the FCC. The closest to EN55025 for EMC is SAE J1445: 2006.
In addition, the 3 major U.S. automotive manufacturers have their own standards for EMC, which are based on EN55025 for the most part. But these standards are not mandatory. EMC automotive standards are still voluntary, despite issues with Toyota and other vehicles' electrical systems.

Can Medical Devices and RFID Peacefully Coexist?
|
AIM Global, FDA, and MET Labs have combined efforts to assess potential RFID interference with electronic medical devices.
Now, MET is seeking manufacturers of medical devices to submit their products for testing to validate the program's test protocol.

| MET Tests "Vehicle Awareness Devices" for DOT |
|
Final rounds of regression testing are now being performed on these "connected vehicle" devices.
Qualification testing is next, followed by Safety Pilot deployment in Michigan in late 2012. |
| The purpose of this pilot is to determine how effective these devices are in mitigating vehicle-to-vehicle collisions. |

Anti-Islanding Testing per UL 1741
Anti-islanding testing has become more prevalent with the growth of grid-connected alternative energy systems. Islanding occurs when a section of a utility system is disconnected from the main utility voltage source, but an independent generator continues to energize the utility lines in the isolated section. MET tests the anti-islanding required function of photovoltaic (PV) and wind inverters in accordance with UL 1741. |
