HALT and HASS are the newest testing processes to be offered by MET
MET Laboratories now offers Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) at the Santa Clara, California laboratory.  Both of these testing processes use rapid temperature transition and random vibration to ensure a product will not fail under any condition in the field.  These testing processes attempt to stimulate failure through extreme conditions therefore reducing development time and cost in the future.  This process is the closest simulation to a real-world environment possible in the industry.  Manufacturers can be assured after the HALT and HASS testing that their product has the same reliability and long-term durability as a mature product.

The HALT and HASS testing are done in the new Typhoon 2.5 chamber, manufactured by Qualmark and takes, on average, between 2-5 days.  The chamber features a 4th generation advanced vibration system that ranges in energy from 10Hz to above 5,000Hz.  The chamber also has an impressive thermal performance, ranging from +200° C to -100° C.

A HALT/HASS seminar was held at MET’s Santa Clara laboratory on June 25th. The seminar discussed the history, processes and benefits of HALT and HASS testing.  The seminar, led by an engineer from Qualmark, was very successful.  To learn more, visit www.metlabs.com/pages/halthass.html or contact info@metlabs.com.

New equipment advances testing for lightning surge requirements
Watthour meter manufacturers and retrofitters can rely on MET Laboratories to quickly validate lightning surge requirements for both national and international standards. The acquistion of the PIM 100 Combination and Ring wave test system, manufactured by Haefely will allow MET to test up to 8kV and fulfill the following standards:

· IEC 61000-4-5 Ed. 1 & 2
· ANSI C62.41/45
· IEC 61000-4-12
· ITU K 20
· ITU K 45
· ETSI EN 300 386-2

This new system will allow MET to surge through the combined Coupling/Decoupling Network (CDN) for equipment that pulls up to 32A.  The benefits of this equipment include reproducible test results and a significant reduction to the overall test set-up time.  The PIM 100 will allow MET to handle additional simultaneous surge testing.  This is a significant addition to MET’s watthour testing program.

EPCIS Validation Portal hosted by MET
EPCglobal Inc. is pleased to announce that as of June 2008, the EPC Information Services (EPCIS) Validation Portal (VP) is available for full use. This much anticipated on-line service is a fast and simple way to visualize the data content of EPCIS information and provides essential tools to determine if there are any errors. EPCIS VP secure site analyzes EPCIS data and verifies its adherence to:
  • The EPCIS specification
  • EPC Tag Data Standards
  • EPCIS Vocabulary Standards
The EPCIS data is instantly analyzed and results are immediately available to be viewed, printed and saved for future reference. This validation process is key to ensure that companies implement RFID applications correctly and their EPCIS data can be exchanged with their trading partners. This easy to use, extremely valuable website portal can be accessed at http://www.epcisvp.com. The EPCIS VP portal represents the combined efforts of EPCglobal Inc, and MET Laboratories. All enquiries regarding EPCIS VP should be sent to epcisvp@metlabs.com.
In addition to being the exclusive test lab for EPCglobal for RFID hardware and software certification, MET can perform all the regulatory testing, product safety and EMC testing, for any RFID device. Learn of all the services MET provides the RFID community.

  •   MET listed Duracell Grace Industries TPASS-3 a hero in national TV ad
MET's product safety lab tested and certified the Grace Industries, Inc. Personal Alert Safety System (PASS) Models SuperPASS 3-x and TPASS 4-x. This unit was featured in a Duracell Battery commerical featuring firefighters in a potentially dangerous situation. The device will sense an absence of motion if the wearer becomes immobilized sounding an alarm to assist rescue crews in locating the firefighter in distress. The unit was tested and certified for both the United States and Canada to applicable national safety standards for intrinsically safe and non-incendive equipment for use in hazardous locations.

MET has a long established history testing and certifying equipment for use in hazardous locations, and is licensed by OSHA for numerous standards under that classification.

EMC testing at MET Santa Clara, California
Silicon Valley's newest and best EMC facility boasts 18,000 square feet of temperature controlled test space including, a brand new, full-height, fully anechoic 10 meter chamber, a new 5 meter chamber, full immunity capabilities and state of the art wireless testing capabilities. The 10 meter chamber in Santa Clara is now fully automated for:
    1) Radiated emission 10K-18GHz
    2) Conducted emission 10K-30MHz

MET's new dual antennae process, can simultaneously prescan 30 MHz - 1 GHz and 1 GHz to 10 GHz for radiated emissions compliance in LESS than 20 minutes, the fastest in the nation.

    Customers Appreciated on Both Coasts
On July 27th MET’s headquarters in Baltimore held their Annual East Coast Customer Appreciation Day. Customers got to enjoy a Maryland favorite, steamed crabs, as well as other goodies from the grill. We had a great turnout and despite a short, but severe, storm everyone enjoyed themselves. Thank you to all of our customers who visited us and we look forward to next year.

On August 5th in Santa Clara, California and on August 6th in Union City, California MET will hold its Annual West Coast Customer Appreciation Days. Both days will be filled with laboratory tours, great music, fun door prizes and delicious food. RSVP on-line. Please contact Prizma Esquivel at 510.214.4443 or pesquivel@metlabs.com for more information. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
