Summer Home Appliance and Electric Tool Safety Tips

During the summer season, as home appliances and powered yard tools are working overtime, significant risks including injuries, fires, and deaths present themselves in and outside of the home.

Several recent highly publicized recalls, fires and fatal injuries offer the reminder that tools and appliances used every day in the home can pose a safety hazard.

Although common household items are not considered dangerous, underneath their seemingly every day exterior, they can present a number of risk if used improperly.

With technology continuing to push the boundaries of common household itemss, safety precautions must also expand and underscore the importance of ensuring that products are certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL).

From large home appliances, to garage/yards tools and other battery-powered electronics; Here are safety tips and recommendations from the NFPA, CPSC, and FEMA to keep in mind for your home this summer.

Expansions & Recognitions

The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have given notice of MET’s status as a Notified Body for radio equipment under the (RED) Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU).

The Radio Equipment Directive (2014/53/EU) has been applicable since 13 June 2016 and was in a one-year transitional phase until June 12, 2017.

RED revises the (R&TTE) Radio and Telecommunication Terminal Equipment Directive (1999/5/EC) and establishes a regulatory framework for placing radio equipment on the free market, ensuring a single market for radio equipment by setting essential requirements for safety and health, electromagnetic compatibility and the efficient use of the radio spectrum.

As a “notified body” for the RED 2014/53/EU, MET can provide an expert evaluation of the manufacturing process, the quality system, and the product design, as well as testing to determine whether radio equipment meets the basic requirements for effective frequency usage, EMC, safety and more.
