With
the passages of the 2002 Defense budget and the
Homeland Security Act, increasing attention is
being drawn to COTS products – Commercial,
Off-the-Shelf products repackaged for military
use.
The
1991 Dept. of Defense Strategic Acquisition
Initiative mandated that U.S. defense contractors
must look first at COTS products when developing
new technology and upgrades.
A
product that works perfectly well in civilian
life, though, may not last long under the harsh,
rugged extremes that a military situation would
subject it to.
Perhaps
the most critical area of COTS testing is vibration
and shock. As an article recently posted on
vibrationandshock.com notes, “One of the
common sources of COTS system failure is vibration…Vibration
testing can improve the odds that the device
will survive.”
MET
Laboratories answers this critical need with
complete, comprehensive vibration and shock
testing in both East and West Coast labs.
