What is SAR testing?

Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) testing is the Radiofrequency (RF) dosimetry quantification of the magnitude and distribution of absorbed electromagnetic energy within biological objects that are exposed to RF fields.

These levels are expressed as Watts per Kilogram (W/kg). International regulatory bodies are requiring SAR evaluations for most portable and mobile wireless technologies.

Our IndexSAR system is designed for full regulatory qualification testing as well as for investigations for non-regulated products

Specific Absorption Rate - SAR

MET Performs Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Testing to all US and International SAR Standards.

MET employs a DASY4 professional system with the newest RX 90 robot to our already extensive, globally recognized, Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) testing capabilities.

The SAR chamber has a IXA-020 ‘Fast’ Amplifier for the SARA2 system.  This will allow SAR scans to be completed in half the time. With the addition of the newly released EX electric-field probe, MET can now measure SAR up to 6GHz with greatly reduced uncertainty.

DASY4 SAR tester

With MET's Index SAR system already in place, and the addition of the DASY4, MET can test virtually any wireless device.

MET as a TCB, can currently approve handheld Cellular/PCS phones and other transmitters that have been tested in accordance with FCC procedure OET65 Supplement C, from June 2001.

Parameters that can affect SAR include:

  • Types of radio service (cellular, PCS, LMR, WLAN, etc.)
  • Types of modulations (CDMA, GMSK, TDMA, AMPS, etc.)
  • Physical orientation to person (held-to-ear, held-to-face, belt-clip, Lap-held, etc.)
  • RF power level (in Watts or mW)
  • Changes to transmitter, antenna (extracted/retracted) or accessories (clips, batteries, etc.)

SAR Testing is Required for More than Just Cell Phones

FCC classifies a wide range of standalone independently operated portable transmitters as being potential candidates for SAR testing. Laptop computers, for example, may required SAR testing. Handsets, pagers, and other devices that are worn on a belt can also require SAR testing. When portable transmitter antennas and radiating structures are less than 20 cm from persons, except extremities (hands, wrist, feet and ankles), and depending on the device’s frequency and threshold levels, SAR testing may in fact be required.

MET's SAR capabilities include handheld and body worn devices such as Cellular/PCS GSM/DCS CDMA/GMSK/TDMA/AMPS phones, PDA's, Laptops, held-to-face walkie-talkies, W-LAN (2.4GHz and 5.7GHz), UNII, U-PCS, as well as many other domestic and international devices.

SAR Testing for Europe

European RF Safety Harmonized standards are used for SAR devices:

EN 50360:2001 Product standard to demonstrate the compliance of mobile phones with the basic restrictions related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields (300 MHz - 3 GHz)

EN 50364:2001 Limitation of human exposure to electromagnetic fields from devices operating in the frequency range 0 Hz to 10 GHz, used in Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and similar applications

EN 50371:2002 Generic standard to demonstrate the compliance of low power electronic and electrical apparatus with the basic restrictions related to human exposure to electromagnetic fields (10 MHz - 300 GHz) - General public

EN 50385:2002 Product standard to demonstrate the compliance of radio base stations and fixed terminal stations for wireless telecommunication systems with the basic restrictions or the reference levels related to human exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields (110 MHz - 40 GHz) - General public

As a Designated R&TTE CAB, which is a Notified Body, MET is authorized to review compliance in accordance with these standards as well as any other standards that we feel are appropriate.
